As in water face reflects face, So a man’s heart reveals the man.
~Proverbs 27:19~
When we look at ourselves in the mirror or down into water we notice our own reflection. If not for these things, how then can we see what we truely look like? Others can describe to us our features; our smile, our eyes or our nose but it doesn't seem to be the same as actually witnessing what that looks like for ourselves. As humans we desire to see things with our own eyes. A lot of the time this will hinder some in their faith. I used to be this type of person; "I will believe it when I see it." I can tell you this did not work out well for me in most cases. Our Father in heaven sees us for exactly what we are. When looking into our reflection, sometimes we see with our own eyes something that does not line up to how we believe of feel. If we are living each day striving to take on Christ's image we will begin to see ourselves more as He is.
"He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation." (Colossians 1:15)
Our hearts will mimic the desires of God in us and those around us will begin to desribe how we look to them. It will be so obvious that it is truely Jesus they are seeing. The way we love, treat others and praise God will begin to come through and show itself in our own reflection; "Now may the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God and into the patience of Christ." (II Thessalonians 3:5)
All too often we find our flesh battles against us and we struggle to put on the mind of Christ. Perhaps it is anger within us that wars with our soul keeping us from loving those around us; "So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath." (James 1:19)
Maybe we are dealing with selfishness deep within us that we are not willing to do all that God has called us to do; "Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself." (Philippians 2:3)
Say we just find ourselves becoming lazy and not wanting to sacrifice things we enjoy for the Lord's will; "The lazy man is wiser in his own eyes Than seven men who can answer sensibly." (Proverbs 26:16)
What so ever it may be, these types of things that well up in our own hearts will display itself in our reflection. Do we want to look in the mirror and smile, seeing the presence of Jesus in us or do we want to look and frown seeing only us and our darkened heart?
As humans, we are naturally selfish, hateful, bitter, judgemental and impatient. The Lord desires to help us die to these parts of us and welcome His Spirit to lead;
"For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live."
(Romans 8:13)
The beautiful thing as children of God, believing in His Son, we are seen as Jesus to the Father. He looks at us and sees that righteousness of Jesus, as we openly cover ourselves in His garments. We can take those garments and walk side by side with the Lord making sure we do not dirty them with our own unrepented sin. Let's face it, we will all mess up at some point. We will still sin at times. We will still slip and fall. Are we noticing when we do and repenting while stopping or are we believing that we have no need to do so more then the one time we came to Christ? If we are openly sinning, repentance is always needed. Let us be pleased with the image we see in our reflection and strive to please the Father with what He sees in us; "Would not God search this out? For He knows the secrets of the heart." (Psalms 44:21)
What does our reflection look like right now? I know we are all very different and unique and thats beautiful. Is there something we see in us that does not show who Jesus is? If so, we can ask Him to help us better ourselves so that we enjoy our own reflection because we will see what He has done to change it. "For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known. And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love."
(I Corinthians 13:12-13)
Prayer:
Father God, thank you for the ability to know You, Your Son and Holy Spirit. I long to be pleased with my own reflection as You are pleased with me. You know my heart and if there is any wicked way effecting how I portray myself to others, please help me change this. I want others to see me and see only Jesus. The love, the light and the faith shining through me that says "I know the Lord." I pray for patience, love, strength and endurance to do what is good and right. I repent of any sin I may be committing and I pray for Holy Spirit to reveal these to me fully so I may stop. I bless those of my brethren and I praise You for giving us eachother. Help me to help as many as I am assigned to. Lead me in the way of righteousness each day so I may look at my own relection and see Jesus Christ, my Lord and my humble King living in me. Amen.
Wow. That brought tears to my eyes. Beautifully said. Thank you
