Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression, But a good word makes it glad.
~Proverbs 12:25~
"Rise up this mornin' Smiled with the risin' sun Three little birds Pitch by my doorstep Singin' sweet songs Of melodies pure and true Saying', (this is my message to you)
Singing' don't worry 'bout a thing 'Cause every little thing gonna be alright Singing' don't worry (don't worry) 'bout a thing 'Cause every little thing gonna be alright."
A sweet simple song written by Bob Marley. I know what you're thinking. Really? Bob Marley in a devotional? Yes! Only for a time being, however. I'm not here to give a biography on this man, only to use his attitude as an example. I understand you may think he represented a different spiritual aspect but according to his family's confession Bob was baptized several month's before his death and some of his last words as he stretched out in agony were, "Take me Jesus." His music always showed his love and praise to God but it wasnt till the end when he gave his life to Jesus Christ. The good news is, its never too late for someone to give themselves to Jesus! The thing I love about this particular song is you can see the relation to scripture. "Don't worry bout a thing," he says. Something Jesus can sway His head back and forth to! Jesus says; "Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ (Matthew 6:31)
He basically sings along with Bob. Jesus tells us everything will be alright as we trust in God. We may go through tough trials. We may even get sick one day as Bob himself did. But we can rest in the arms of Jesus, knowing our time in this world lies in His hands. Praise is everything to God, especially in a time of distress. We should be praising just as the birds as they sing sweet songs. Without a garment of praise the spirit of heaviness enters into us, (see Isaiah 61:3)
Solomon understood, as he was filled with the Lord's wisdom, that anxiety is bad on the body, soul and spirit. The cure for our depression? It's the word. The word of truth when sung in our heart and praised out loud through our mouth will make us glad. We will be full of joy we cannot fully understand as we take on the spirit and word of God. Seriously, try listening to Bob's song without smiling, singing along and feeling glad; I'd be suprised if you could! The three little birds Bob wrote about reminds me of the Holy Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. They sing sweet songs of melodies pure and true with a message. This message is the word of God presented to us and we can rejoice as it is pure and true. "Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things." (Philippians 4:8)
In this verse we see those two words come out. We are told to meditate on these things. When we start to meditate on things that are not of God we begin to feel worn out and depressed as the enemy has a way to kick us even more. When we constantly praise and rejoice in His word of truth and purity, we are adding to our divine joy through the spirit itself, and in return the devil flees. He can't stand happy people of God! Paul says to; "Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice!
(Philippians 4:4) If there was anyone who had a right to feel depressed, it would of been Paul. The things he endured were very tough, however, here he was rejoicing every step of the way! I bet he would of loved Bob's song Three Little Birds! A man who sang praises shackled in chains in a dungeon prison, always looking to glorify God; that's how we are called to live! We are told time and time again in the bible to "sing to the Lord." Many times David penned Psalms that advised singing and praise to God. Prophets and kings understood as well. It is everywhere in this beautiful word! "I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have my being."
(Psalms 104:33)
"Sing to the Lord , For He has done excellent things; This is known in all the earth."
(Isaiah 12:5)
If we have any ounce of anxiety in us, let it go with praises to God! Rid yourself and listen to Jesus to not worry, for He is in control. We are not. Submitting to His ways will follow with blessings. We may need to endure, we may need to suffer a little while, we may even lose things; but we will gain peace with Christ; "For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also abounds through Christ." (II Corinthians 1:5)
We can dive into the word of God, grab ahold of the spoken words of Jesus and have gladness in our hearts as we praise Him for who He is and what He is doing. No matter what is ahead, the message still remains the same! Truth never changes and my friends as we push on to the Glory that is in front of us let's remember that every little thing is going to be alright! Follow the Lord in His victory! Keep singing. Keep dancing. Keep praying. Do not give up. Jesus didn't, Paul didn't and Bob Marley didn't. Why should we?
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank you for the comfort that You give me through Your Holy Spirit. Fill me each day with divine joy and I shall sing praises to Your Name and cause my enemies to flee! I declare that I have no need to worry for You are in control. Help me to have a bright attitude so that I can walk in Your glory each day and defeat whatever trial is ahead of me. I give honor and praise to my King of Kings for always being there with me through the fire. For it shall not burn me. As You are with me I can do all things. Lead me today in the way of righteousness, Lord. Help me to be free of any tension I may be carrying so that I can move forward in this spiritual journey. Thank you for loving me. Thank you for trusting me. In Your joyful Name I pray, Jesus Christ. Amen.
