“The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “Therefore I hope in Him!”
~Lamentations 3:24~
Our souls cry out for a filling of joy, love and completeness. We harbor wants, needs and feelings within us and if we are not allowing the proper things to come in and be there, we will end up not feeling satisfied. We will keep hoping in other things around us. In this verse, the pain from judgement was lingering amongst the people and the souls of many must of felt damaged. This word gives us an example of how to get through even the worst of times; "The Lord is my portion." Portion in this context refers to an allotment, an inheritance or a part. The Hebrew word for portion means "to be smooth," in regards to smooth stones used to cast lots; to distribute or separate. The Lord desires for us to give that center of ourselves to Him, to separate our own needs and wants to His own. When we do this our souls will hope in Him alone. When darkness comes we will not fear for our hope will be in Him. "In righteousness you shall be established; You shall be far from oppression, for you shall not fear; And from terror, for it shall not come near you." (Isaiah 54:14)
We may be in the midst of hard times with others yet we are part of His inheritance. If there is anything you may be struggling with to hope for in this moment, focus on the joint heir you are in Christ Jesus. "and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together."
(Romans 8:17)
As we are heirs of His seed and Family in Christ. Abram is a great leading example of keeping God as his portion within his soul. When asked to sacrifice his own son, Abram obeyed not even knowing where or why. He simply loved and trusted God enough to do as He asked. He received God as His portion. He hoped in Him alone. Abram could of very well made Isaac his portion and in doing so would of disobeyed God. We must separate ourselves to what the Lord desires of us above all else, even our own children. We can trust that what He does with us will be according to His plan. In the end God saw Abram's great faithfulness towards Him that He of course told Abram not to go through with the task;
"And He said, “Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.”
(Genesis 22:12)
Abram made a choice, so can we. Does our soul say back these words, "The Lord is my portion" on a daily basis? Or are we placing our hope in something other than Christ alone? God made Abram a father of many nations; "As for Me, behold, My covenant is with you, and you shall be a father of many nations." (Genesis 17:4)
Our blessing follows after his leading with Jesus Himself. After God made a covenant with Abram, He proceeded to change His name to Abraham, symbolizing that he was now blessed with a multitude of many. In this way our blessings have trickled down. As we come to Jesus Christ we receive the blessing of that seed. We are His portion and He shall be ours. Our hope should come only from Him. Times are shifting and days are zooming by. As things begin to change more frequently we must keep our souls, body, minds and spirits aligned to God.
"and not holding fast to the Head, from whom all the body, nourished and knit together by joints and ligaments, grows with the increase that is from God." (Colossians 2:19)
Without doing so, we will become distracted, we will slip into a snare or we will become discouraged at the first sign of chaos. Let us boldly say "The Lord is my portion, my hope is in Him." We shall put Him first in the center of our desires and balance ourselves in a healthy manner as we keep our guard up against the wiles of the enemy. Praise God for such a gift! We have the inheritence of Jesus Christ, we share His great and awesome Name and we are separated out of this world already. Let us walk in that promise declaring in our soul that He is more then enough for us everyday, our hope residing in Him!
Prayer:
Almighty Father in Heaven, I thank you that You are my portion. Thank you for giving me the blessing of being a joint heir in Your Son, Jesus. As I go on throughout my day help me to remember my hope is in You alone. The situations around me are temporary but You are forever. Lord, I praise You for Your strength, joy, love and completeness which fills my soul. I am surrendering each part of myself to You and asking that You reveal the pieces I am not making You my portion. I am declaring this day to be blessed and filled with hope in You, making all glory which others see be given to You alone, in Your Mighty Name Jesus Christ. Amen.
