Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; For I shall yet praise Him, The help of my countenance and my God.
~Psalms 42:11~
David was a man of many emotions, yet he was never afraid to express them all to God. He was honest and secure with how he truely felt as he knew God was faithful and the only One to help him feel any better. As David spent much time being rejected, hunted and alone in the world; he knew God always loved him and the Kingdom was always for him. He may have vented his anger to the Father, or cried out in pure sadness like in this Psalm, but he always came back to his hope in God alone. When we are in a relationship with someone, we know how important it is to be honest. Honesty expresses true love and security in that person. When people have a relationship with the Lord, all too often they tend to hide certain feelings from Him; even though let's face it, we definitely can't hide from God; "The Lord looks from heaven; He sees all the sons of men."
(Psalms 33:13)
When we only pray certain words to Jesus yet leave out all of what our heart battles, how do we expect a deep intimate relationship to grow? It is no different then a man telling his wife that he cannot help her unless she tells him what it is that upsets her. A man will say, "I can't read your mind." I know you're thinking, "but you just said God can read my mind." This is true, however, He still longs for us. A longing for an intimate relationship with us. He sits on His throne reaching out for each of us and waits patiently for us to reach back for Him. When David came to God in anguish, depression or joy; he was always doing just that, coming to the Lord with every single emotion he felt knowing the Lord would be his only hope. For he knew people could not remove his feelings. There has been many times, for me personally, when I have felt a certain emotion and wept out to God asking Him to please remove said emotion and replace it with His divine peace, moments later I feel this very thing occur. He is faithful to remove our pain, but we must go to Him for that help and being faithful in Him that He will do what we ask in that moment. Words are just that, words. But words spoken in faith can move mountains, my friends. I have seen it happen all too often. When we are at our lowest points in life, Jesus is waiting to help.
"And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me."
(II Corinthians 12:9)
For when we feel our weakest, the power of Christ may rest upon us and set us free!
David, a man after God's own heart, spoke with faith knowing that no matter how much of a mess he became in the moment, the Lord would deliver him; "Blessed is he who considers the poor; The Lord will deliver him in time of trouble." (Psalms 41:1)
So he poured out his heart to God and wept when needed, yelled when angry and jumped for joy when happy. Every feeling went straight to the Father first. Jesus says when we seek Him first, the rest will follow. "But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you." (Matthew 6:33)
Jesus never lies, this is truth. Everything He says, He will do. Even though He sees us in our troubles and knows every feeling we feel without saying it; the way to true relationship and knowing Him more is to pray everything we feel from our heart. He smiles as we do so, for He loves a trustworthy servant, one who abides in Him and not men.
"She will chase her lovers, But not overtake them; Yes, she will seek them, but not find them. Then she will say, ‘I will go and return to my first husband, For then it was better for me than now." (Hosea 2:7)
For our help does not come from men or idols. Those will provide temporary "peace and security," until it runs out. The things of God are eternal. We can always rely on Him and know He will never break a promise as men do. If you are feeling sadness, cry out to God in anguish and tell Him exactly what you need. If you are angry, yell out to Him and be real with Him for nothing will suprise Him. When you are happy tell Him so, that way He can rejoice with you! He is there for every need and we are to love Him with our full heart that He made for us to love Him with, for He deserves our genuine honesty and trust. "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength." (Deuteronomy 6:5)
If the devil can silence you from praying out to God with pure truth, he can stop you from receiving exactly what Jesus has waiting for you. Satan doesnt want you to have a relationship with the Lord. He wants you to love yourself more; to become selfish and full of self pity so that you can abide in the world for a "fix." The power of God outweighs the worldly things everyday, but it is our job to put our faith in Him to help us. Our hope should always be in Him, just as David tells us. "The humble shall see this and be glad; And you who seek God, your hearts shall live."
(Psalms 69:32)
Choose life! David did, and time and time again he was set free from chains that nobody else would of been able to break. Let us strive to put our hope in Jesus, for He put His love into us when He gave His life on the cross. Let us start to really seek Him each day, for He is our present help in trouble and despair. He can give us true rest.
Prayer:
Gracious God, thank you for Your amazing love and help You are waiting to fill me with. Show me to always come to You first, just as David did. I know You are willing to deliver me from my troubles, no matter what they may be. I know the world is temporary and deceiving, I want to focus of what is eternal and true. Thank you for giving Yourself for me to become free and so that I may have a close relationship with You. Without Your Blood shed on the cross, I know the separation between God and I would still be there. I am forever grateful that I can come boldly to the throne of grace each day. I praise You in the storm just as much as in the sunshine, for I understand Your faithfulness is never changing. I pray to be stronger each day, faithful to You and unwavering in my prayers. Holy Spirit, interceed on my prayer life and tell me what I am missing. Thank you for dwelling inside of me and may all glory and honor be given to You. Let those around me see and hear You through my actions and words as I follow You. In the precious Name of Jesus Christ, I pray this. Amen.
